How Laser Hair Removal Works

TARGETING HAIR FOLLICLES

Each hair follicle on your head goes through a growth cycle consisting of three phases. The first phase, called the anagen phase, is when the individual strand of hair is actively growing.

This phase lasts the longest – up to 7 years in some cases! After the anagen phase is complete, the catagen phase begins. This is a short phase that lasts around 10 days. The telogen phase is the final stage, where the follicle releases the strand of hair and it falls out. The follicle then stays inactive for about three months before once again starting the active anagen phase. Laser hair removal works by targeting hair follicles in the active anagen phase. These follicles absorb the light emitted by the laser, which is then converted to heat that damages the follicle and prohibits future hair growth. Since only hairs in the anagen phase can be targeted, several laser hair removal treatments are necessary to achieve most people’s goals.
